Why use large metal sculptures to decorate your garden?
Using sculptures and other types of art as garden decor isn’t a new idea. Sculptures made from different materials such as wood and stone have played a role in people’s lives throughout history. The Greeks and Romans, for example, had a habit of displaying sculptures representing their gods and heroes in their gardens. Today, sculptures continue to hold significance—but in ways that are different to those of the past. Here are three ways sculptures can bring something extra to your outdoor spaces:
1. Adding a personal touch
Personalising your garden is just as important as personalising your home interior, so you can create a space that brings you comfort and ease. Sculptures and pieces of art are an effective way to add a personal touch and create a relaxing atmosphere in the garden. Take some time to choose a piece that attracts your attention, reflects your personality, resonates well with you and complements the available space in your garden.
2. Providing a symbolic value
Art can be an ongoing reminder of a significant event or achievement in your life. When a sculpture commemorates a celebration such as a birthday, anniversary or an important milestone, you’ll have a pleasant memory of that symbolic moment every time you step outside and into the garden. Those special occasions can be appreciated by, and shared with family and friends when they visit.
3. Enhancing mindful spaces
Spending time outdoors can bring physical and mental health benefits that promote your well-being and deepen your connection with nature. Our busy lifestyles these days mean we need this in our lives now more than ever. Adding art pieces and sculptures to the garden makes outdoor spaces more inviting and interesting. We can become inspired by, and positively drawn to our gardens, enabling us to reap some of the many benefits of being outdoors.
How to use metal sculptures in your garden or yard
If you’re thinking about adding decorative metal sculptures to your yard, or if you’re interested in reorganising the layout of your current sculpture collection, here are a few suggestions to bear in mind. Listed below are factors to help maximise the impact of your selections in your outdoor spaces.
Find the right spot
Firstly, locate the best spot for each sculpture. If you own some large sculptures, each one can be used as a centrepiece or focal point of a different area of your garden or yard. Single out the parts of your outdoor space that you would like to highlight or add interest to, then make a home for a sculpture to draw attention and create interest in that area.
If you have open, available areas in your garden and you’re not sure how to make use of them, accessorise those spaces with a piece of art! Sculptures are a great way to fill up empty spaces to create interest.
Add contrast to your garden
Have you got a small to medium-sized yard or garden filled with small plants, trees and flowers? Try adding a large sculpture in the centre to create a contrast. Consider choosing a height, thickness, texture and colour that is different to the look of the existing plants. For example, try our beautiful branch obelisk sculpture to use in contrast with a small, colourful garden.
Light and clear visibility
Make sure the spots you choose to display your sculptures get enough light from all angles during the day. Are there large trees nearby whose tall shadows will obscure the sculpture? Are there protruding branches or other obstructions disturbing the view? Sculptures look great when they can be easily seen out in the open without any distractions.
On the other hand, shade can sometimes be used to your advantage. Subdued or gradual shadows can add a novel look to your sculptures. This all depends on the layout and placement of trees in your garden and what sort of theme you’d like to maintain.
Organise them by theme
If you have many sculptures that you’d like to put in your garden, consider placing them according to a theme or category. For example, if you have a zoo theme in your backyard, group a few animal-shaped sculptures around; or for a more modern look, try a selection of abstract and angular pieces. While keeping the lighting and shadows in mind, try to avoid placing sculptures too close together where possible as this can prevent them from receiving their own individual attention and appreciation.
Use a plinth to add height
Smaller sculptures can add a glamorous touch, but if they aren’t placed at the correct height they may go unnoticed. Some sculptures tend to have short legs or stands, much like our abstract cube sculpture. For a decor piece like this, consider displaying it on its own plinth at eye level so you and your visitors can appreciate it properly. As a general rule, place only one piece on a plinth, so it can be admired individually.
What are the most commonly used sculpture materials?
Decorative garden sculptures can be made from a variety of strong and durable materials. Some of the most common types include the following:
- Clay
- Concrete
- Wood
- Metal
- Ceramic
- Cast stone
- Corten steel
- Stainless steel
- Marble
Sculptures at Overwrought Garden Art are made from metal which eventually forms a pretty rust patina. The patina layer adds a unique touch of natural beauty to each piece.
Why does Overwrought Garden Art use metal for sculptures?
We use mild steel because it is ideal to withstand Australian climatic conditions, it can be easily shaped, and it is the most cost-effective material for our customers.
We are able to craft garden art using corten steel and stainless steel on request only. Please note that the higher cost of corten steel and stainless steel means the finished product will cost more than its mild steel equivalent, however the results are well worth the investment.
