What are magnets used for? Many things—including garden decor pieces

Metal magnets in different shapes and sizes are a wonderful way to add character to your garden—and this is one of our favourite ways to use them too! At Overwrought Garden Art, we handcraft our magnets, which come in a range of designs inspired by Australian flora and fauna. They make an attractive—and inexpensive—addition to your nursery, backyard or garden.

We have been making outdoor metal art pieces, including our popular range of garden magnets for sale, for over 15 years and have thousands of satisfied customers from all over the world. Let us help you find out more about magnets, including how best to use our magnetic artistic designs to enhance your garden, and why you’ll love our designs.

What is a magnet?

We’ve all played with magnets before, but have you ever wondered how they work? A magnet is a piece of metal or a rock with an invisible force that pulls certain types of metal towards it. This is known as magnetism, and it is a basic force of nature. Magnets have a north and south pole, and the magnetic forces between these two poles create a magnetic field. That’s why magnets stick together! Opposite poles attract, while the same poles repel each other.

As far back as the 12th century AD, ancient civilisations used magnets in the form of compasses to help them find their way. Our whole planet works like a big magnet with a north pole at the top and south pole at the bottom. A compass is an instrument with a small magnetic pin suspended in its centre that rotates in response to the earth's magnetism. It will always align itself to point north towards the top of the earth’s magnetic field—which has helped explorers and travellers find their way with accuracy for centuries.

What are magnets made from?

Most magnets available today are man-made. Ferromagnetic materials, such as iron, cobalt, and nickel can be magnetised by exposing them to a magnetic field using an electric current. An electromagnet is another type of man-made magnet, made when an electric current moves through a coil of wire. When the electric current stops, the magnetic force ends. At Overwrought Garden Art, our magnets are man-made from a mix of metals.

What are magnets used for?

In addition to compasses, magnets have such a diverse range of uses in our lives that it would simply be impossible to list them all. Here are a few everyday objects using magnets that add value to our lives, making them easier and more enjoyable:

  • Children’s toys
  • Indoor and outdoor decor
  • Pieces of jewellery
  • Home appliances
  • Home and office furniture
  • Gym equipment
  • Medical equipment
  • Machinery and more

Our magnets at Overwrought Garden Art are ideal for outdoor decor. Add a touch of charm or personalise your garden with any of our handcrafted magnets.

Can magnets be used on a fridge?

Yes, they will stick to many metal surfaces, including the doors of fridges. They’re commonly used to hold up important notices and reminders, shopping lists, celebratory cards, a child’s artwork, and photographs, and they’re also used to make decorative displays. Some people even collect them!

Some years ago, there was a theory that the magnetic fields in fridge magnets might affect the quality of food within. This is completely false. Fridge magnets have a magnetic field that is too weak to pass through a fridge door, so cannot negatively affect the food stored inside. So, go ahead and personalise your fridge doors with as many magnets as you’d like!

How long do magnets last and do magnets get weaker with use?

Your magnets should last a lifetime—they generally don’t lose more than about 1% of their magnetism over 100 years. However, heat exceeding 80° Celsius can cause a magnet to lose its strength, so it’s best to keep your magnets away from heat sources likely to reach these extreme temperatures.

How to best use our magnetic decor pieces

We’ve seen what magnets are generally used for, but what exactly are our magnets used for? We’ve grouped the main uses for our magnets into three categories:

1: Using our magnets outdoors

As a manufacturer of metal garden decor, our products are generally used in gardens, nurseries or backyard settings. Get innovative and personalise your garden by displaying some art in the form of magnets. You can place them on the ground in a strategic position—try our bullfrog magnet near your pond. Hang them from tree branches—our  butterfly magnet will look great fluttering away in the wind! Perhaps you can display our ballet dancer magnet on a feature wall in your garden. Mix and match different designs to create an original, enticing focal point.

2: Using our magnets indoors

The fridge will probably be the first place that comes to mind when you think about an indoor magnet display. Our magnets can decorate your fridge, or be used to hold up reminders and other important notes, as many of them are small enough to fit on fridge doors and other metal surfaces. Indoor flower pots, planters and hanging fern baskets are also wonderful places to add a few decorative magnets. If you have a shed that you’d like to decorate, our magnetic art could be your answer. Hang up a few magnets in a corner or place them on a tabletop or metal surface to add character and a distinctly personal touch.

3: Giving our magnets as presents

Gift giving can have so much more value when the gift is a long-lasting handcrafted item especially chosen to suit the personality of the person receiving it. This is just one of the reasons why our magnets make popular gifts for family, friends and colleagues. If someone you know has moved overseas, give them a kangaroo magnet for their garden or to put on their fridge door. Have you got a friend with a green thumb? Magnetic garden decor makes a unique and memorable present. There are plenty of opportunities to give our magnets as gifts and make someone’s day!
